We used to keep our feeders full in the winter, but squirrels were consuming the seeds faster than the birds. And they kept defeating our efforts to keep them off the feeders. But our yard is just about as natural as we can make it and still live here.
Doug, I have the squirrel buster tube feeder but the dastardly squirrels were coming around today on the ground under it. I scattered red pepper flakes all over the ground. Hope that deters them. Happy new year and thanks for reading.
We have defeated the squirrels with the squirrel buster, but I don’t mind them cleaning up underneath. It’s amazing what will grow underneath if not.. wheat, corn, etc. The deer like the bird seed also and will butt it to get seed to fall out. I haven’t figured that one out except to bring it in for a few days now and then. I really don’t mind them eating from it. Winter is tough. I have never taken it down in the spring tho.

Love this, Pamela. I have three feeders and a woodland backyard. Busy birds here!
Sounds great. I’d love to come over to watch the action. I’ll nab Fred one morning and we’ll do it! Thanks for reading!
