Growing up in East Tennessee, we would often see chestnut tree stumps in the woods. They were massive! In their fear of the blight lumberjacks would cut healthy trees, losing genetic resistance. So sad.

I hate that I never had an opportunity to use chestnut in a woodworking project. It used to be the go to wood for furniture in NC.

Yes. that is too bad. Dolly Parton's uncle was very involved with the mission of saving the American chestnut tree. There are trees planted around Dollywood, I've read, and some picture frames (and other things) in her lodge are made of chestnut wood. I need to go visit.
